Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Staff reports

Second baseman James DiBiasio plated the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning, but Muskingum rallied for two runs in the bottom of the frame to nip Ohio Wesleyan 7-6 on Monday in Port Charlotte, Fla.

With the score tied 5-5, junior outfielder Scott Wise (Delaware Hayes) led off the ninth with a double and moved to third on an infield single by freshman outfielder Craig Phillips. DiBiasio then bounced into a double play, with Wise scoring to give the Bishops a 6-5 lead.

Alex Vaccaro led off the bottom of the ninth with an infield single, chasing sophomore righthander Robbie Shane, and sophomore righthander Andrew Cox took the mound for the Bishops. Vaccaro moved to second on a sacrifice and took third on a wild pitch before Forrest Wright walked and Brock Whiteman was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Erik Spitzer followed an infield single to Cox, scoring Vaccaro with the tying run, and Wright scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by junior outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware Hayes) and an RBI fielder’s choice from sophomore first baseman Nathan Strome, and the Bishops added two more runs in the second without the benefit of a hit, taking advantage of Muskie pitcher Jared Patterson’s three-base throwing error on a sacrifice by freshman shortstop Zach Bott.

Muskingum came back with a Tyler Hardcastle RBI in the second, evened the game with three runs in the third with the help of Jared Whittington’s two-run single, and took the lead in the fifth on Whiteman’s infield grounder.

The Bishops tied the game at five in the seventh as DiBiasio led off with a single, moved to third on Michael Congrove’s throwing error and scored on Bott’s sacrifice fly.

Frentsos went 2-for-4 and DiBiasio scored three runs to highlight the Bishop offense.

Junior righthander Eric Livingston (Delaware Hayes) started on the mound for Ohio Wesleyan, throwing five innings and allowing five hits and five runs. Cox was charged with the loss in relief.

Chris Wolfe picked up the win in relief for Muskingum.
